Check out the blue and silver pinwheel garden in the side garden at Zion! Beth Deskins and Kamala Bauers "planted" the pinwheels for NRV CARES Pinwheels for Prevention emphasis on child abuse prevention. NRV CARES invites us to join in Pinwheels for Prevention to celebrate happy, healthy childhoods. Pinwheels for Prevention represents an effort to focus on community activities that support families and prioritize prevention right from the start. Shining in the sun, the pinwheel is reflective of the bright future all children deserve.Thank you to those who also worked weeding and cleaning up the garden.
So often when disasters happen in distant countries, we feel there is nothing we can do to help. In the case of the recent tragic earthquake in Nepal, there is a way. You can send a donation to Lutheran Disaster Response and know that 100% of your gift will go to help earthquake victims. LDR has an office in Nepal which is open and working to get aid into the areas that need it most. I just made a gift online and it's easy. Go to www.ELCA.org/disaster. On the home page, choose "Nepal Area Earthquake" from the list; on the next page click on "Give Now." You can then enter your information. If you prefer to mail your gift, send it to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, ELCA Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 1809, Merrifield VA 22116-8009 and write "Nepal Area Earthquake" or "Where needed most" on your check's memo line. Mark your calendar for our joint Wind and Fire worship service on Pentecost Sunday, May 24 at 10:30 am. This year, our service will be at the home of Billy and Linda Motley at 512 Oak Hill Drive in Floyd. We'll worship and share a meal outside - bring a lawn chair and a side dish or dessert. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided.
Today is the birth date of William Walker, southern musician, teacher and inventor of the seven-shaped-note musical system. Walker spent much of his life collecting traditional tunes of the southern Appalachians. His tunes appear in 10 of the hymns in our hymnal, including "What Wondrous Love is This" and "Amazing Grace." "Sing to the Lord a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts." Psalm 33:3 Yours in Christ,Pastor Linda
