I returned home from Virginia Beach last evening after three days at the Virginia Synod's Gathering of the Ministerium. This yearly event is attended by pastors, deacons and synod staff and is usually on the eastern coast of Virginia since those folks have to travel to Salem for Synod Assembly each year. This week, we heard from a Dietrich Bonhoeffer scholar, were addressed by our new bishop, worshipped together and shared some great meals. Most of the scheduled free-time events were cancelled by Tuesday afternoon's rain, but that didn't totally dampen everyone's good spirits since it provided a chance for some long naps. I met some of the newer pastors in our synod and marveled at how young they seem to be these days!
2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. On Sunday, October 29, we'll have our usual Zion 9:30 am and St. Mark 11:15 am worship. Then, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, all are invited to the Motley home for a cookout featuring bratwurst and beer. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be available and we'll soon have a list of side items for which we can sign up. There will be an intergenerational craft project and donations will be received for Lutheran Disaster Response for hurricane relief.

The parish directories are here! They will be available at church this Sunday or at the parish office next week (call Rhonda first to be sure she is there @745-2096.) One we have distributed directories to all who had their pictures taken, we will figure out how many additional copies to order so others may have one. PLEASE let me or Rhonda Womble know if there are any mistakes in your listing. We will share the corrections with the parish.
Please keep in your prayers: Gary Washam, brother of Debbie Fullbright and Jan Fullbright, mother of Phil. Gary is hospitalized and Jan is in a rehabilitation center.
