This morning as I was driving to the hospital to see my mother, I listened to an old Van Morrison song, "Whenever God Shines His Light on Me." I have the song on a CD I made for our wedding reception and have listened to it many times over the last seven years, but today the lyrics seemed to mean more to me than they ever have before. Morrison sings,
"He'll lift you up and turn you around
And put your feet back on higher ground
Reach out for him, he'll be there
With him your troubles you can share
You can use his higher power
In every day and any hour."
As a family, we have had some low moments over the past month, but we have felt God's hand lifting us up out of despair over and over again, so many times that I have grown to expect it. God's light shines through so many it's hard to keep count. Another verse of Morrison's song goes like this, "He heals the sick and heals the lame
Says you can do it too in Jesus name."I met a nurse this week who lives this verse every day. She's about 5'2", maybe 110 pounds; she's from the Philippines and her name is Fraulein. Yes, it's her real name, something I'm sure she has to assure people of many times a day. Fraulein is a force to be reckoned with. She knows her stuff and she doesn't cut corners on patient care. I have the feeling the other nurses are a little afraid of Fraulein, but I loved her. When she found out my mom is a Christian, she prayed with her (and me and another nurse) before surgery and in the ICU. Fraulein does her healing work with joy and in the name of Jesus. It's what we all can do; we may not be able to pray with everyone we meet, but we can sure share Jesus' healing power in our words and actions. My mother came home this afternoon and is resting comfortably. I will stay this weekend and will go with her to the oncologist on Monday to see what the plan is going forward. I hope to come home on Tuesday.________________________________________
Make sure you have your calendar marked for Sunday, November 9 at 3:00 pm at Zion. That's when we'll have the dedication service for Zion's new organ. Vickie has prepared some wonderful music and there will be refreshments afterwards.
Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed on Saturday night or you'll be an hour early for church!
Yours in Christ,
