++Billy and I had a quick but safe trip to Iowa to attend his family reunion this past weekend. Billy was able to reunite with a cousin he hadn't seen in over 40 years. I could see the connection they had and still have through their joking about their boyhood exploits and sharing their love of golf. As you might imagine, with nine of Billy's ten sisters there, there was a little drama that revealed some old hurts. Overall, the reunion was fun and filled with love.
We drove; our trip took us through Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. I had not driven that route before and what struck me most was the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of miles of cornfields. As I thought about all the ways we use corn in our country (food for people and animals, gasoline additive, sweetener, base for alcohol), I realized how dependent we are on the hard work of farmers and the crops they grow and how dependent they are on good land and favorable weather. It was food for thought. Pun intended.
++Thank you to Rebbecca Jackson, Marty Holliday and Laura Leroy for leading worship last Sunday. I'm sure there were others I don't know about, so thank you, too!
++Billy and I invite you to our home for an Independence Day meal and fireworks watching party. The town of Floyd has changed the date for its fireworks to July 7 so that's when we will have the party.
Here are the details:
Friday, July 7, 7:00 pm. We will provide hamburgers and hot dogs and water and lemonade.
You bring a side or dessert and another beverage if you prefer. Also, please bring a lawn chair or blanket.
++A couple of dates for your calendar:
Sunday, July 30 Zion homecoming
Sunday, August 27 St. Mark homecoming
Both are joint services and you are encouraged to go to both as we celebrate the ministry we share as a parish.
If you know someone who might want to attend these services, please let them know, especially Zion's July 30 service since this is a change from Zion's usual date on the first Sunday in August.
And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.
