On Saturday, Billy and I are going to visit our friends Christy and
Paul and their children Sadie and Riley, ages 3 and 2. It's always a
lot of fun to visit with this family; Christy and I go back over 20
years and I officiated at the couple's wedding about 7 years ago.
Being with Sadie and Riley is always a blast. You never know what
Sadie is going to say and Riley is a bundle of giggling
energy. Our visits always have another layer of meaning because we
are Riley's godparents. We promised at his baptism to nurture Riley in
the Christian faith and to support him in his life in the church. To be honest, that's a bit challenging with a two year
old, but we are finding ways to do that: by giving him books about
Jesus, by praying with his family over meals and by showing our love
whenever we are with him and Sadie. You parents, grandparents, aunts,
uncles and godparents have a great responsibility to teach your
children about God's love and to model that love for them. I can't
think of a greater privilege than to show a child how to love others. May God give you bountiful love, patience and strength as you fulfillthis most important role!
