Sunday August 27th – 6 pm - Windfall Concert at the Oak Grove Pavilion
Join us for the Windfall reunion in the beautiful Oak Grove Pavilion. They have not played together for many years and we have not had a concert in the Pavilion since before 2020. A free-will donation, to benefit our Community Cares program, will be taken at intermission. Concert starts at 6pm - Bring your family, friends, lawn chairs and dinner if you want!
Imagine: a warm summer evening with children catching fireflies, families picnicking under ancient oak trees, couples gliding across the dance floor while musicians play only a few feet away on an outdoor stage. Is this the stuff of days gone by or just another Saturday evening in Floyd? If you guessed the latter you have unlocked one of Floyd’s best kept secrets!
Just behind the 200-year-old historic Zion Lutheran Church, the Oak Grove Pavilion is a music venue unlike any other in the town of Floyd, VA. Aside from boasting the counties longest running outdoor venue, the wooden stage and dance floor, picnic tables, and canteen present an idyllic setting for music lovers. Rev. Paul Pingel (Zion/St. Mark Lutheran pastor from 1993-2003) was at the church retreat when the idea of the pavilion was conceived. “The Council was asking the question of how the congregation could reach out to the community. Our discussion included using the resources we had at hand, which of course included the beautiful Oak Grove behind the church building, and the need for community activities, which would allow anyone from the county to find welcome at Zion. From many ideas came the decision to build a Pavilion designed to host events for free, and where donations would be collected and given to local charities.”
For more than two decades the OGP has provided high-quality music (including jazz, blues, gospel, funk, new age) and a family-friendly atmosphere while raising money to support a number of local charities. Over the years the pavilion has collected over $65,000 in offerings during intermissions, cakewalks, and through canteen sales. Among the charities that have benefited: Angels in the Attic, Floyd County Rescue Squad and Volunteer Fire Department, New River Community Action, Women’s Resource Center, Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley, Floyd Free Clinic, and Reading is FUNdamental.
The pavilion’s season typically kicks off in June and runs through August with an average of 6 events planned on Saturday nights over those months. The final event of the summer is the Silver Bells/ Christmas for Children benefit dinner. The only pay-to-attend event features special musical guests and a beans and cornbread meal. Attendees can choose a seat and relax under the pavilion itself or bring their own lawn chairs to stake out a place under the majestic oaks. The pavilion is staffed and maintained by volunteers who believe in the mission behind the music. “It really is amazing,” says Rebbecca Jackson, a Zion Lutheran member and volunteer. “Floyd is a close-knit community. Each dollar given by concert goers and sponsors will in some way support someone you know; it’s a good feeling to be part of it.” One event goer gushes about the atmosphere on the OGP Facebook page: “What a fun evening! Oak Grove Pavilion is the best place around to go listen to music, and the dance floor is a great addition. It's hard not to get up and dance.”
Past events have included musical acts such as Upland Express, No Strings Attached, Grace Notes, Windfall, White Top Mountain Band, and Dry Hill Draggers. The Oak Grove Pavilion Facebook page is a great place for up-to-date concert information and photos and videos of past performances. A unique tradition of the pavilion is the popular bi-annual original drama. Rev. Pingel shares one of his fondest memories: “One year, on a rainy night, the play was about a pirate, and just when the pirate actor said something about a storm, some thunder and lightning boomed as if on cue, and everyone in the audience was very impressed!” Rain or shine, events at the pavilion go on.
The original vision of the founders of the Oak Grove Pavilion endures after two decades. All events continue to be free with 100% of donations going to charities. 2020 Season is under construction, check back often for more information or follow us on Facebook.
